In collaboration with the CityU, the University of Oxford, and the Karolinska Institutet, the Hong Kong Centre for Cerebro-cardiovascular Health Engineering (COCHE) was established with the support of the ITC-InnoHK Programme to develop new ways to tackle cardiovascular disease (CVD), which is the world’s leading cause of morbidity and mortality. To address the most pressing health challenges caused by CVD, COCHE focuses on developing innovative technologies such as flexible and wearable devices, biomedical and molecular imaging, nano-biosensing, micro-robotics, healthcare AI systems, and other groundbreaking methods to enable early prevention, diagnosis and intervention of the disease. Over 50 research positions at all levels ranging from Research Assistants to Chief Research Scientists, including two executive Programme Directors and 35 Postdoctoral Fellows/ Research Scientists positions, are immediately available in the emerging field of Cerebro-Cardiovascular Health Engineering. The goal is to develop innovative technologies focusing on unobtrusive and flexible sensing, biomarker detection, biomedical and molecular imaging, biomedical signal processing and modeling, nano-robotics, and AI in health for the early prediction and prevention of acute Cerebro-Cardiovascular Diseases (CVDs). The role of the open positioning is to lead and drive ongoing ITC research Centre projects involving both theoretical studies and hands-on experimental work as well as clinical applications.
Job Description
The Research Assistant might work for one of the COCHE spin-off companies, which is called E-sense Innovation & Technology Ltd (E-sense). It is a biotechnology startup developing a proprietary medical grade portable medical imaging device. The device is undergoing clinical validations via clinical trials. The patented medical imaging technology has a wide range of healthcare applications in terms of disease screening and vital organ health monitoring.
E-sense’s founders are PhDs and researchers from top-tier universities with strong backgrounds in biomedical technologies, basic and translational research. The research team is in partnerships with universities and research institutes in Hong Kong as well as worldwide, with topics in medical image processing, medical diagnostic machine learning and mathematical modelling.
As a member of the team, the successful candidate will be responsible for the research and development of next-generation medical imaging system for vital organ health screening and monitoring. It depends on your expertise and interest, and would consist of ONE of the following:
• Clinical trial design and implementation, including clinical document preparation for ethical approval, clinical protocol design, data acquisition and analysis.
• Medical research in dielectric properties associate with anatomy and dysfunctions in human vital organs
• Algorithm and mathematical model development and implementation for medical imaging device, specifically on inverse problem, image reconstruction, and signal processing pipeline.
• Automatic segmentations and feature extractions of medical functional images for disease early detection and treatment monitoring
• Software and applications development for medical imaging device for clinical users and consumers.
• Firmware OR circuitry design for electronics development for device performance and hardware design optimizations.
• Research proposal, research articles and manuscript writing and publications.
General Qualification
• Bachelor’s degree in any of the STEM field.
• Strong background in academic research preferred .
• Strong interest on clinical and translational research .
• Demonstrate problem-solving skills through innovations, hypothesis design and implementation analytically and quantitatively.
• Team player with effective verbal and written communication skills in Chinese and English
• Attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
Preferred Hiring Qualifications:
Remuneration & Duration of Appointment
The remuneration package will be highly competitive, and commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits for full-time appointments include leave and medical insurance, etc. The possibility of re-appointment after the initial contract period will be based on performance evaluation and mutual agreements.
